Safe Sidewalks Crew Assessment Tool Demo and Walk
Get some fresh air and explore the neighborhood where the conference is being held with Pittsburgh Walks, a coalition of local nonprofits and community members advocating for safe, accessible, enjoyable walking across the city! Along the way, we’ll show off the Safe Sidewalks Crew – a collaboration between Pittsburgh Walks and the City’s Department of Mobility & Infrastructure (DOMI) to crowdsource data about sidewalk conditions, and you will get to try out the survey tool yourself. The data we collect together will help the city identify where sidewalks need to be improved or built, prioritize pedestrian infrastructure projects, and make the case for funding. Meanwhile, the volunteers who collect the data are building a community to advocate for the infrastructure we need to thrive. More Information on the Safe Sidewalks Crew Thank you to our tour organizers Mobilify and Bike Pittsburgh Know Before You Go: This tour is wheelchair accessible. BIKE 9:30 AM - 12:30 PM ET
Multimodal Mon-Valley: How Former Steel Sites were Reborn with Trails and Bike Lanes
A bike tour of Pittsburgh’s Monongahela River Valley former steel sites turned to bike trails and bike lanes. Hot Metal Bridge, Eliza Furnace Trail, Beehive St, Carrie Furnace Trail - These are some of the leftover names from Pittsburgh’s steel era that have been (and are continuing to be) repurposed into a world class trail and bike lane network. The downsizing of Pittsburgh created opportunities to think differently about how we use our land and our streets, and it’s still a work in progress. In the case of Hazelwood Green (on the tour), the former steel site created a near blank slate to design a new neighborhood and street grid from scratch, which is becoming a hub of tech and robots. To further the multimodal connections along the Monongahela River, trail planning efforts are ongoing to connect Hazelwood Green to the existing Duck Hollow segment of the Three Rivers Heritage Trail with an extension to the Carrie Blast Furnaces National Historic Landmark. This bike tour will take you to these sites and through history to see how Pittsburgh transitioned from the loss of its major industry to the economy of the future. The ride is flat and will be mostly on trails and bike lanes. It will be led by the City’s two non-profits who work in the bike and trail space, Bike Pittsburgh and Friends of the Riverfront. Thank you to our tour organizers Bike Pittsburgh and Friends of the Riverfront Know Before You Go: This is a mostly flat route. There are a few short sections where we’ll be riding in traffic. These sections either have a bike lane or are on a low-traffic street. Attendees will need to sign the Bike the Burgh Tours Agreement/Waiver, as well as the Friends of the Riverfront waiver.
