2018 President's Message
Monday, February 5, 2018
As I begin my second term as Board President, I want to take a moment to thank you, our APBP members, and provide a brief update on our priorities for the year. In 2017 we made tremendous progress on association strategies: we trimmed our expenses and ended the year well within our budget; we unveiled a fabulous new logo; we continued our industry-leading webinar program; and we hosted a wonderful conference in Memphis, TN, learning from each other and about that city’s legacy of equity and change.
In 2018 we will continue to implement the association’s strategic plan. Alongside our core focus of operational excellence and sustainability, we are tackling several fun projects including a new website! The site will be fresh and mobile-friendly while continuing to support our member database and functions. We are offering a new Global South membership for our colleagues in Mexico and Central and South America, along with membership outreach and renewal campaigns. We will be continuing to support our friends, including a series of joint-member features with ITE, promoting Walk/Bike/Places along with Project for Public Spaces, and looking for new opportunities with our national peers and local chapters.
Our Board of Directors continues to be a fantastic group of dedicated volunteers. I’m pleased that in 2018 we have representation from every corner of the country, from Georgia to Massachusetts, Florida, Oregon, California, West Virginia, and Ottawa, Canada. We are joined by three fantastic new board members and look forward to working with each of them over their terms. The Board meets monthly and will hold our annual association meeting at Walk/Bike/Places in September.
My request to you, our members, is to get involved. Volunteer on a committee, join or start a local chapter, present on a webinar, or contemplate future board leadership. Pitch APBP and membership to your colleagues and professional networks. Jump in to conversations on the listserv and social media, host a webinar in your office, and plan to join us at Walk/Bike/Places in New Orleans. The knowledge, expertise, and passion of our members is the foundation of our association so thank you again for your support.
