Gil Penalosa has worked with more than 150 cities on every continent, convincing them that rapid improvements to transit, bike lanes and pedestrian walkways are not as impossible as they may think. He advocates putting people, not cars, at the centre of planning. “If you build a city that is great for an eight-year-old and for an 80-year-old, then you build a city that is going to be great for everybody.” To him, it is not about walking or cycling or parks or sidewalks; those are the means to an end. The goal is a vibrant city with healthy communities, and happier citizens.

Dr. Kay Teschke’s prolific work has rewritten the study of cycling motivators and safety. She is a professor in the School of Population and Public Health in the Faculty of Medicine at UBC. Riding a bike is a healthy and safe activity; however, despite the fact that “you’re much more likely to be injured playing a round of golf or kicking around a soccer ball than you are riding a bicycle”; safety concerns continue to be a barrier for many people to experiencing their city on two wheels. Kay’s work has shown that the way we design our cities can encourage cycling and reduce the risk of injury. Her results have been used all across the world by planners, engineers, and designers seeking to increase the use of bicycles for transportation.

The Tran-Form Speaker Series is sparking dialogue about city-building, vibrant public spaces, mobility, health, urban design and livability. Let leading experts inspire and educate you with fast-paced presentations.
