The APBP Ken Cross Scholarship for Student Research - 2015 Poster Contest

Professional Development Seminar
St. Louis, Missouri | September 28 - October 1, 2015

The 2015 Student Research Poster Contest is over. The next contest takes place in 2017.

Student members of APBP are invited to enter the 2015 Poster Contest for the APBP Ken Cross Scholarship for Student Research by submitting an abstract of a completed research project related to bicycle or pedestrian studies. The awards committee will select five finalists to present posters of their projects at APBP's Professional Development Seminar in St. Louis, Missouri, September 28 - October 1. Finalists will make a 3-minute presentation during the plenary lunch on Wednesday, September 30, and afterward will participate in a poster session where attendees will vote on the Grand Prize winner. The Grand Prize is an APBP Ken Cross Scholarship for Student Research award to attend the 2016 Pro Walk/Pro Bike conference in Vancouver.*

The jury is particularly interested in research related to advances in technology that improve safety; innovative treatments or experiments; research that tests policy or guidelines; and studies on the economic impacts of bicycle, pedestrian or Complete Streets projects. We welcome a myriad of research approaches; both quantitative and qualitative, case studies, surveys, spatial analyses and other creative solutions to answering pressing research questions in the field.

Judges will evaluate the submissions looking for:

  • Clarity of purpose and research need
  • Appropriateness of the methodology
  • Interpretation of the results
  • Value of the research to bicycle and pedestrian professionals

Abstracts should be no more than 250 words; submit your entry using the online form on this page. Both undergraduate and graduate students in any relevant field of study may enter the contest. You must meet these criteria to enter the contest:
(1) You must be an enrolled student during the 2014-15 academic year. Students graduating in Spring 2015 are eligible to apply.
(2) You must be an APBP member in good standing (dues paid) through October 31, 2015. If you're not currently a member, you can join for just $30/year here

The Student Poster Competition made its debut at the 2011 Professional Development Seminar in Charlotte, N.C. Thanks to the generosity of the Ken Cross family who endowed the Ken Cross Research Fund at APBP, the student poster competition has been established as an award program within that fund. Read about Ken Cross here.

*The fine print: Each finalist will receive a student registration to the 2015 Professional Development Seminar in St. Louis and a travel stipend up to $250 (reimbursement for travel based on receipts). The Grand Prize includes one student registration to the 2016 Pro Walk/Pro Bike Conference in Vancouver, B.C., and a travel stipend up to $250 (reimbursement for travel based on receipts). Contest entries will be reviewed and all participants will be notified on July 15, 2015. Finalists must notify APBP of their acceptance by August 15 and must register to attend PDS by August 31. APBP reserves the right to award one or more honorable mentions (without prizes) if more than five posters are determined to be of merit. APBP reserves the right to select no posters if abstract submissions are determined to be of insufficient merit.
