2017 Non-Profit Sector Professional of the Year

APBP 2017 Professional-of-the-Year: Non-ProfitSector
Leah Shahum, Executive Director, Vision Zero Network

Following a hugely successful time as Executive Director of the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition, Leah founded the Vision Zero Network at just the right moment. The Network provides a valuable venue for cities pursuing Vision Zero policies to come together, share their experiences and move the agenda forward.   In the past 12 months, however, the Network has truly come into its own and Leah is taking the organization and the issue to new heights in two critical ways. First, Leah has overseen publication of a series of critical resources for any community working on traffic safety -- particularly those striving to maintain the high standards of the Vision Zero/Safe Systems approach to traffic safety. The reports tackle tough issues like equity with a practical, transparent approach.  Second, Leah has brilliantly represented the Network in numerous mainstream and high-level venues--in particular as a member of the steering committee of the Road to Zero coalition. This national initiative, led by the National Safety Council and NHTSA/FHWA/USDOT is a potentially game-changing project that has transformed the way critical federal agencies and national organizations are talking about traffic safety. It will take time, but this may result in many more US states and local agencies adopting a Safe Systems approach to traffic safety.  Leah has shown over the last year that she is a great communicator, a tremendous collaborator, and someone who is capable of identifying and working with critical players in the field who are outside the normal realm for bicycle and pedestrian professionals -- and yet absolutely critical to our profession. Once again, the timing could not be better as "safety" is going to be the single most important reason for communities to invest in bicycling and walking projects—and perhaps the only major source of Federal funding for a few years to come.
