New Edition Includes Best Practices for Indoor, Long-term and In-street Parking
Cedarburg, WI - The Association of Pedestrian and Bicycle Professionals announces an updated edition of its flagship publication, Bicycle Parking Guidelines. The rapid growth of bicycling, particularly in urban areas, has spurred many innovations in the field of bicycle parking. The new guide addresses the varied parking needs of both commuter and recreational cyclists with expanded guidance on long-term and sheltered parking, as well as event parking, in-street bicycle parking, and bicycle transit centers.
"APBP’s Bicycle Parking Guidelines is an essential tool for communities seeking to become more bicycle friendly. It will help them provide functional bicycle parking,” says Kit Keller, APBP’s Executive Director. "APBP’s mission is to develop expertise for sustainable transportation; this guide helps communities and professionals encourage more people to bicycle by providing places for people to park bicycles.
”The first edition of the guide, published in 2002, has been widely cited and adopted by local jurisdictions to provide guidance for planners and developers; it dealt mainly with suggested racks for short-term parking. The second edition augments the original document with recommended elements and specific performance criteria for racks and lockers, guidance for short- and long-term bicycle parking and maintenance practices, sample site plans and diagrams to assist in rack and locker placement, and sample quantity requirements for bicycle parking to meet need by land use. Abundant images and charts illustrate concepts and conditions.
A team of APBP members and other experts began work on the peer-reviewed guide in 2008; a draft was previewed at APBP’s Professional Development Seminar last fall. Lead author Eric Anderson is the Bicycle and Pedestrian Coordinator for the city of Berkeley, Calif., and a member of the APBP Board of Directors. He has nine years of experience in the bicycle and pedestrian transportation field, spanning agency, consulting, and advocacy roles.
Bicycle Parking Guidelines, 2nd Edition, is available for purchase from the Association of Pedestrian and Bicycle Professionals at
