Bike share programs are transforming public transportation in cities of all sizes. In 2013 the total size of bike share systems in the United States more than doubled with launches in major cities (New York, Chicago and San Francisco among them) and continued expansions in existing systems. Cities increasingly recognize bicycle sharing as an essential piece of their overall transportation systems, for reasons of mobility, livability and economic competitiveness. Join APBP for a 4-part webinar series that explores the rapidly evolving domain of bike sharing as bicycle transit in the larger context of transportation planning.

This session, the second in the series, focuses on funding bike sharing programs. Attendees will learn how to formulate an initial business plan and assemble different sources of funding to successfully launch and operate a system. Presenters will discuss case studies of different funding sources used for capital and ongoing operations of bike share, including fully public funded, fully sponsor funded, public-private partnerships, and blends of these financing models. Individual presenters will describe:

  • Steps of preparing an initial business plan for bike sharing, using the recent Bike Share Philadelphia Strategic Business Plan as a case study;
  • Use of federal and local transportation funding sources to run the Divvy bike share program in Chicago;
  • Best practices for acquiring bike share sponsorship, based on experiences negotiating sponsors for a range of systems including Portland, New York, and Chattanooga;
  • DecoBike’s privately-funded systems in the Miami Beach area that rely on advertising and sponsor branding through a public-private partnership model.

Presenters are Mia Birk, Vice President, Alta Bicycle Share; Tony Hull, Senior Planner, Toole Design Group; Scott Kubly, Former Deputy Commissioner, Chicago Department of Transportation; Colby Reese, Chief Marketing Officer, DecoBike.

Subsequent sessions in the series are:
