Connecting with Public Health Professionals on Bicycle and Pedestrian Issues

This policy-oriented webinar will demonstrate the connections between an active living partnership and bicycling/walking policies and programs. Presenters will discuss a case study from Hennepin County, Minnesota, in which technical assistance provided by an umbrella group through support from Blue Cross/Blue Shield (workshops on Complete Streets and Winter Walking) helped gather diverse constituencies to catalyze pedestrian and bicycle policies and planning.

Webinar participants will learn:
  • How to understand and articulate the synergies between nonmotorized transportation planning and public health
  • How governments, businesses and community partners can connect to develop partnerships to carry out this work
  • How to create and successfully shepherd policies through approval by elected bodies.
Webinar presenters are Karen Nikolai, Community Design Liaison, Hennepin County (Minn.), and Vayong Moua, Senior Project Manager, Center for Prevention/Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Minnesota. Nikolai has worked for Hennepin County since 1999, and in January 2006 became the county's first liaison between the county's public works and public health business lines. She works within the county, and also with external partners including cities and developers, to create policies and programs in the areas of Active Living and Complete Streets. She sits on several national committees and influences broad-reaching policy. Karen has Masters' degrees in City and Regional Planning (MCP), and Public Health (MPH) from the University of California at Berkeley.

Vayong Moua works on passing public health policies that reduce obesity, tobacco use, and health inequities. Previously, he was a welfare reform and environmental justice policy analyst for the state of Wisconsin. Moua received a bachelor's degree in philosophy, sociology/anthropology, and Asian studies from St. Olaf College, and a master's degree in public affairs from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Born in Laos, Moua has also studied and worked abroad in Asia.

APBP has applied for one CM credit from the AICP for this webinar. A certificate of attendance for those wanting to claim Professional Development Hours will be available.

Cost is $50 per site for APBP members; $60 per site for non-APBP members. Each site registration includes one phone connection (toll charges apply, or use VoIP), one Internet connection, one set of handouts, and access to the recording. An unlimited number of participants may attend at the same site.
